The exhibition Cities of Light. Ákra Leuké. Lucentum. Laqant at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), offers a unique journey through the history of the Tossal de Manises, a key site in the urban and cultural evolution of Alicante.
This archaeological space has witnessed different civilizations that left their mark on the region. The exhibition explores everything from the first prehistoric settlements to the Carthaginian foundation of Ákra Leuké, the Roman splendor of Lucentum and its transformation into an Islamic necropolis.
An innovative and accessible museum design
The exhibition project combines scientific rigor, advanced technology and sensory immersion to bring visitors closer to the history of Alicante.
Through large-format models, original archaeological pieces, virtual reconstructions, immersive audiovisuals and tactile and sound resources, the public can understand the role of Ákra Leuké and Lucentum as strategic centers in the Mediterranean trade routes.
Each room has been designed to reflect the different phases of the Tossal de Manises, from its consolidation as a Punic and Roman enclave to its abandonment and reuse in the Islamic period. In addition, the exhibition highlights the conservation and restoration work of the site, showing both original materials and reconstructions that allow us to visualize its evolution over time.
Exhibition architecture at the service of history
The museographic design creates an immersive space where the architecture, the light and the layout of the exhibits reinforce the historical narrative. Among its main resources, the following stand out:
- Thematic tours organized chronologically to facilitate understanding.
- Interactive showcases that allow a detailed observation of the archaeological objects.
- Immersive projections and soundscapes transport visitors to different eras.
- Scenographic lighting that highlights key pieces and creates differentiated atmospheres in each section.
This approach transforms the exhibition into an immersive experience, where the architectural and museographic design dialogues with the archaeological findings to offer a clear and accessible interpretation of the past.
A cultural legacy that transcends time
Cities of Light allows to understand the evolution of Alicante from an innovative perspective. Its exhibition design facilitates the public’s connection with the Mediterranean heritage, offering a detailed vision of the civilizations that left their mark on the Tossal de Manises.
The exhibition is an opportunity to discover how architecture, archaeology and museography combine to tell the story of a territory in constant transformation.
